Shamanic Shadows. One Hundred Generations of Undead Subversion in Southern Scandinavia, 7,000-4,000 BC

By Jimmy Strassburg

The book Shamanic Shadows discuss the Stone Age in Southern Scandinavia from a queer theoretical perspective, taking the reader from the time that region was part of a great landmass that connected Great Britain and Ireland with northern Europe to the time when the land in question was flooded in such a way that it transformed into a number of archipelagos lying like beads along the north-west European Atlantic coast. The discussion is basically an anthropological one, which is consistently based on thorough material analyses. Subjects that recur in the book are shamanism and gender issues, same-sex and cross-sex relations, the relations between the living and the dead, animal spirits and cosmic myths, burial rites, social organisation and power. It also deals with the deep heterocentrism of archaeology and physical anthropology. The book contains substantial amounts of archaeological material that have so far not been presented publically, as well as large amounts of material that have been unavailable to English readers.
